S&TC Quote of the Week

Carrie Bradshaw: New York Magazine says Brooklyn is the new Manhattan.

Miranda Hobbes: Yes, but whoever wrote that lives in Brooklyn.

In Da YouTube; Spoiling Yer Moviez...

If you don't want a spoiler for S&TC the movie, then don't click on the tape.

I, however, totally spoiled it for myself and am looking to bring others down the same path with me. G'head - click click!

Forgive my lack of posting - my muscles are crying out screams of abuse due to a little DVD called Hip Hop Abs. Yeah - I know. One word - "MPs".

Appearances Can Be Deceiving...

However, one thing that always lives on is a good John Hughes movie. Tonight, WE is running "Sixteen Candles." Even though I went to a catholic high school, it seems like high school was the same - public or private.

I always wanted to be like Sam with wearing the cool clothes to school, the fashionista friend, and, of course, Jake Ryan. I don't think we had a "Jake Ryan" in our school but, when I was a sophomore, there were these two football players - Jim and Joe (twins) who many gals crushed on. They were two years ahead of me so when they graduated, I don't think there was anyone in my class that I crushed on in my Junior/Senior year. That was when I was dating someone *ahem* older and realized that there was a much bigger world outside the four walls of Cathedral High.

Even the school dance seemed similar - right down to the row of "geeks" on the side, the wallflower gals and popular kids going to private parties after the dance. While I rarely rebelled, I do remember one "party" I went to with one of my friends who was a cheerleader. I just remember thinking "Are you serious" when I watched these football players getting trashed and acting a fool.

What's amazing to me is that John Hughes movies just seem to capture the feeling of that era where so many people can identify with the various characters. And, I don't think there will ever be another movie that captures the ideas that Sixteen Candles conveyed - that while we all may be in our little "groups" or whatever, we still all experience the same insecurities and misconceptions that kids share. And not everything is just as it seems.

Nobody Puts Baby In A Corner...

That is perhaps one of the best lines uttered by Patrick Swayze.

Say what you will, but I still check the gossip reports every so often - kinda like watching the news. You know you don't WANT to know but a part of you can't HELP but know. It's just one of those things.

And today, on PerezHilton it remarks about the sad state of affairs affecting Patrick Swayze and his bout with pancreatic cancer. Normally, I treat stories originally broken by the National Enquirer with a raised eyebrow and a "mmmm-hmmmmm", however when Perez posted the confirmation by Swayze's rep, that about floored me. Wow - just wow. My heart goes out to him.

I can't picture my 80s movies without the usual suspects - and that includes Patrick Swayze. I mean, besides the movies Ghost and Dirty Dancing, Patrick Swayze was often one of those actors who many people go "Oh yeah - he WAS in that". Remember him in The Outsiders? What about his performance in Road House (one of my personal favorites - his portrayal of the tough yet sensitive lead bouncer reminded me of BR in his Annies days)? And even in TV - North & South was one of those mini-series I remember my parents watching (and I wound up buying but sadly I haven't found the time to watch just yet). He's a fabulous actor, imo and I hope that he does indeed have more time than the doctors are saying he has.

And, yes, much like I do every year on Justine's anniversary, I will be watching Dirty Dancing as it was her favorite movie. However, when I watch it this time, I'm praying that cancer won't take one of her favorite actors as a casualty.

Paying Homage to Yesteryear...

I'm sitting here tonight enjoying my much earned day off, watching Movies Rock on CBS instead of my normal Women's Murder Club. (Rob Estes - :::sigh:::) The fiery Rita Moreno just talked about her work in West Side Story, one of my favorite movies of all time. An appreciation for movies of yesteryear I can credit to one of my favorite professors, Mr. Norton. He had a class where we watched various films and it was there that I was engrossed in in the magic that is Old Hollywood. So to see such films as West Side Story, Casablanca, The Sound of Music, Singin' In The Rain and The Wizard of Oz honored tonight, it just reminds me of that particular class where I would sit in the college theater and just be transfixed by the screen and Hollywood Legends and the many conversations I would have with Paul about what we had seen. Paul has since passed but to see this brings back many happy hours I had with him and how much I learned from him. They also profiled some movies that I remember from my childhood like Grease, Footloose and Flashdance profiled, reminds me how times have changed.

This special, for me, is the culmination of a fabulous day off - regardless of the fact that I was too lazy to change The Unholy on Chiller earlier. To see such talent of today* paying homage to all that is past reminds me that movies are more than special effects. To a young mind, they can be magical and give you that creative spark. For me, this was a break from Project Hell that is absolutely needed.
What's your favorite classic movie (or movie you can watch over and over and over again and it never gets old)?

(*Yes, I'm totally biased, but I thought Stacey (Fergie's) performance of Live and Let Die was kick ass! That Nicole chick from the Pussycat Dolls sounded a little flat but eeh. It can happen when you are touring like crazy. I can go without yet another Beyonce performance and Jennifer Hudson - A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!)

Flashback: High Society...

Rather than watch the Emmys tonight, I decided to work on a client's bio and watch a classic movie which I NEVER saw before (but I will be getting for the DVD rack) - HIGH SOCIETY...

Check this out:

Gotta love Sinatra and Bing Crosby...

And the epitome of grace, Ms. Grace Kelly -

and my favorite song, "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire"...

I had NO IDEA that was Celeste Holm in that clip. I remember her from various shows/soaps in the 80s and of course the classic, All About Eve.

Seriously - if you haven't seen it, you should. The cast is amazing - Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Celeste Holm, Louie Armstrong & his band; Music by Cole Porter, etc. etc. etc. Yeah, it's old Hollywood at its best - no super special effects, but good scripts and fabulous talent.

Perhaps its a bit of a carryover from my days at Bay Path where one of my favorite professors, Paul Norton, taught us an appreciation of classic movies, but still they just don't make movies like they did back then :::sigh:::

Nothin' Like A Good Movie To Relax...

You know it's going to be a great evening when one of this gal's fave movies is on repeat - "Two Can Play That Game". I seriously think that all men that wonder "why" should be required to watch this... jus' sayin'...
