Meet Mini-Bout...


The Loubous arrived on Saturday and, oh my heavens, they are gorgeous - a rich chocolate brown that just is set off perfectly against the red peep toe. Granted the cell phone pic quality sucks compared to the in person view as evidenced by a co-worker's loud exclamation of "SHUT UP" when she saw the telltale red sole. My slow preparation of advancing to 4"+ heels over the past year helped me adjust to the height of these lovelies so I wasn't walking like a baby calf taking her first steps. I was meant for Loubous - of that I'm sure.

Ahhhhh - there is no going back, my friends. Trust me I'll be wearing the living daylights out of these shoes but even FB of Fashionably Broke In The City would be proud of the deal I scored...

However, it dawned on me that I mentioned that I would get Mini Bout Peep Toes by CL in 2009 as part of my "Secret" goals. Little did I know that I would find the exact shoes I've been lusting after that just happened to be in my size at the right time and the right price. I'm blessed indeed...

My Confession...

My name is Lys and I'm a Stuart Weitzman Junkie...

I'm afraid of the time where I graduate to the big leagues - i.e. Gucci, Manolo, Choo and Loubou. My wallet is in shock. In the last 48 hours, I have not only scored a fabulous pair of red snake skin look peep toes, but also the shoe I've been coveting for the longest - the Stuart Weitzman Degadis. And, to add to that - the shoes that I thought were unavailable, the Vince Camuto oxford cut out suddenly became available. In my size. It's like the Universe is saying "You want it Lys, it's yours. You've been a good girl". Or, in the alternative, the Devil is tempting me going "G'head - spend money, Lys. You've been a good girl."

Nine West who? Steve Madden what? I'm now in the land of Weitzman, Camuto, Cole Haan and more. Damn you Nordstrom, SmartBargains and the outlets. And I've cash backed, couponed or scored deals on all. I mean, I do have to think of my wallet's feelings, right?Pictures forthcoming.

In Need of a Refresher Course...

I've seemed to put aside my copy of The Secret and, after last week's debacle and every negative thing I thought about, let alone PUT OUT THERE, came to fruition, I said "ENOUGH". I had to reread the 100 Quotes from The Secret to go "Hmmmm..."

Since I was told to get my "head in the game" this weekend, I did. I didn't log into the 9to5 ONCE over the weekend. I worked on rejuvenating my spirit. I relaxed (somewhat). I cooked. I started to organize my place. I started to (with the help of a chart creation from the uber fab FB) organize my finances and I have a solid plan in place for jumpstarting my FICO score. I also put together a organizational plan for me to start my "Declutter '08" Project whereby I will start listing stuff in the next couple weeks either on EBay or a personal site - haven't figured that out yet. I even broke out the limoncello.

All of the above is really breaking down my big goal into little manageable tasks ahead. I also talked for a bit with Meowmix today which also centered me. Nothing like a telephonic slap upside the head, right?

And now, this week, I'll stop nursing my wounds and start getting down to business. Well, after I have another limoncello & lemonade.

And after I watch Bren from Flanboyant Eats tell Emeril "BAM!" tonight at 9:00.

Wandering Soul...

I remember when I was young, I always had a fascination with Europe. I never knew why but I remember once announcing to my parents that I thought we should drive to Poland and go camping over in Krakow. Growing up, I went to a polish catholic school and we were required to take polish lessons frome grade 2 on. I guess I thought it would be neat to SEE the country where I learned to say "Go home and go to bed you old lady" (I thought I was brilliant - I know - far from). Through all those lessons I can only remember two things. The above phrase and the word for "Fish". Other than that - totally out of my head and no retention, whatsoever.


Even when I was getting in trouble from the nuns on the school yard for reading rather than being a social butterfly, I was obsessed with biographies and historical events, mostly Egypt history (still think Hatchepsut was the best. ruler. ever.) and World War II. Perhaps World War II due to my grandfathers fighting in it, but the history of Auschwitz really captivated me as I tried to understand how a person could inflict so much horror on a group of people because of their religion.


While I was in my teens, my desire to travel waned, but when I split from Mark eons ago, I ignited my passion for travel. Sure, I'd go to Philly on the regular but that really didn't count in terms of far and away. Thankfully, I was presented an opportunity to wander when I was doing PR and Vegas became one of my favorite destinations. Meowmix and I would escape to Toronto once or twice a year for various events but actually go to spots where I couldn't technically drive to wasn't until a couple years ago when I went on a cruise with Meowmix, Tra and one of their friends to the Caribbean.


Since then, I've wondered where else I should wander to. After I hit a couple personal goals in the next year or so, I know I want to actually "Travel". Straight up - break out a passport and zip around the world travel. (Note to self: Lys needs to GET a passport first. Perhaps that should be one of my immediate goals, no?)


I know that I want to go to Italy on some sort of a culinary vacation and, after running across a interesting blog with some seriously fabulous photos and travel stories this weekend, Poland crossed my path again - namely going to Krakow and visiting Auschwitz. Seeing the photos made me want to go check it out for myself. Egypt is still one of my "have to see" destinations. I remember Mark telling me once that we couldn't go to Egypt on our honeymoon due to the fact that he refused to muck about in sand. I don't think it's a popular honeymoon spot. Regardless, Egypt is still on my wish list, just not sure when it will be possible with all the unrest going on over there. And, of course, Puerto Rico is also on my itinerary - hopefully in the next year or so.

It's the Little Things...

Keri over at Keri's Klutter has often blogged about things to be thankful for, no matter how small or large. I thought, as it's one of the main factors in the Secret, that I should start vocalizing 7 things I'm grateful for - on the weekly.

So, here it goes:

I'm thankful and grateful for...
  1. Besides my friends and family, those that I encounter that make every day such a joy, including my blog readers :)
  2. The gals at Dunkin' Donuts that had my coffee ready for me before I even walked in the door. It's always perfect. (Makes up for when Josh is there and the coffee is way too bitter and I have to doctor it up when I get home.)
  3. The ability to recognize when too much is too much and stop myself before I get to that point. (Today it was not going totally overboard at M.A.C. - even though I have to replace much of my makeup as it's too old and I heard a few things that skived me out a bit.)
  4. The ability to see clearly - both with glasses and now with contacts. (Thank you Dr. K!)
  5. The strength to deal with the daily grind at the 9to5 and not lose my marbles like I would have 2 months ago.
  6. The kitty who is snoring on the floor - plum tuckered out from way too much playing (wait til she sees the catnip scratchy box I got her for the week - she won't even miss me when I'm in Philly).
  7. The ability to fly to Philly to see great friends, places and experience the best life has to offer. It will be good to be home.

Finances, Finances, Finances...

If something comes across my path repeatedly, I start to pay attention. Right now - everything on Fine Living is all about Time Management (I'm bad at that) and Financial Matters. And the main chatter topic outside of stocks, capital gains, 401(k), etc. - the dreaded EMERGENCY FUND.

This got me thinking - where is my emergency fund? Ala Carrie Bradshaw, where I can see it. Much of it is in my closet and used during the move to furnish the new abode. It's also in my kitchen. So this year, my goal is to fully furnish my emergency fund.

What is an emergency fund, one may inquire? (I'm the inquiring one - trust *LOL*)

A cash reserve that individuals should have on hand that is easily accessible
and doesn't involve selling securities. Financial experts generally recommend
having three to six months of living expenses on hand in case income or a job is lost. [Emphasis added]

I've got to remember that emergency is NOT a pair of gorgeous pricey shoes. It's not a sizzling hot handbag. It's not that cordless immersion blender or copper risotto pot I'm currently lusting after. It's a fund for me to use should something happen - like real ummmm emergencies. As I have plans for this year both professionally and personally, I need to get off my butt (before it expands further) and work on my finances. And you, my dear readers, can feel free to slap me upside the head should I go nuts. Those big expenses I want and lust after - well, I can save for those separately, but I must start building up my E-Fund.

Currently, my ING account is wayyyy lower than it should be. I think Starbucks would scoff at the amount currently in there. As I look at the amount on my excel spreadsheet, I cringe because it should be soooo much more. Well, enough is enough -come January 15th, I have set up an automatic transfer set up for each paycheck with the hope that I should have some $$$ in there twice a month (three times in May and October with the new payroll change at the 9to5). That money needs to never dip below a certain amount - I don't care HOW cute various shoes are or how good of a sale is.

Reading various PF bloggers lists and goals this year has kicked me into overdrive. The one I really want to point out is Single Ma's blog. She's got some great advice on there and if you aren't reading it - you might want to. I also have some PF books that I will be reading and reviewing here on the blog.

The 401(k) account - no additional % will increase this year. There are a number of reasons for that and it wasn't an easy decision but one that had to be made. Not to disclose 9to5 bizness, but the match is not large AT all. It's less than a pair of Stuart Weitzman shoes. I contribute WAY more than that a year. Plus - I thought Suze Orman (or one of those PF people) suggest that you only contribute to the match and the rest to a Roth?? I could be wrong. However, my goal is to start my Roth with USAA by September. In addition to the Emergency Fund Challenge, I'd like to be credit card debt free by December. After that, I'm off and running on fully funding the Roth.

The Sharebuilder account - it's on hold. I've decided there is to be no buying of additional stocks for the next 4 months and that deduction originally earmarked for Sharebuilder will go straight to ING. I won't sell off the stocks I have currently, but at the end of 4 months, April 30, I will evaluate whether or not I will be restarting my automatic stock buys.

I also need to work on the decluttering around here and start putting some stuff on eBay. The proceeds - yup, you guessed it - ING. I have to admit, there are things with tags that I never have worn because they don't fit or look right and it was too late (or I was too lazy) to return. I know, I know - silly Lys! So, either they get donated or on eBay. Those that can be returned (like a 1/3 of what I got at Crate & Barrel and didn't absolutely NEED this Friday or a super cute bustier at Lane Bryant which I will NOT be wearing - total impulse buy) will need to be returned by Sunday. Return credits will be transferred to ING. The same goes for any cash back proceeds or interest earned.

Any money left over in my checking accounts at the end of a pay cycle from my paycheck will be transferred to ING outside of a small emergency cushion in each checking account. You start to see the pattern? Me and my ING account - Total BFF!

Basically I need to set procedures into place because, as I said yesterday, 2008 is *the* year for all of us. And your gal needs to make sure there is a bit of financial security on my end. That security will only begin when I put my mind to it. One thing with The Secret is you can say and visualize everything - but I've also learned that when you start to put things into motion is when things happen. Nothing comes to those who don't work for it.

So, to the Universe - know this - the Emergency Fund Challenge is hereby accepted!

Off Traveling...

I'm headed down to S. Florida (West Palm Beach to be exact) tomorrow. I'm helping a buddy out with an event and I'm excited. Now I know nothing about sports, but that's okay - I got this! So, while I'll still be blogging for NaBloPoMo, it will be via the Blackberry because this gal doesn't appear to have much of a wireless signal at her hotel.

I leave at the crack (stress CRACK) of dawn tomorrow - hell I don't even think the sun will be UP before I leave Orlando for the 3 hr. trek, but it should be fun. If anything, this week solidified one thing for me: I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to. And, oh yeah, I can get by on 3 hrs sleep a night (if I don't make it a habit). I've juggled this thing, the 9to5, client stuff with the PRBiz, some personal drama and, in addition, being a support system for my buddies during their drama. Yeah - me, sleep - we're estranged I tell you. Estranged. Last night I went to bed at 2:30 and I'm up at 6 a.m. Again, solidifying my other revelation - a gal doesn't need sleep as much as she needs adrenaline.

I'm just working on the countdown to Dec. 1st - not for NaBloPomo's sake, but because I would like to keep up with my social life (what little one I seem to have - HA!), catch up on my blogs (I've been negligent - I know - sorry!) and just SLEEP. Also, on Dec. 1st, the 9to5 is having their holiday party and yours truly is going to have a little cocktail soiree prior to the party for those nearest and dearest to her (one must have liquor prior to company functions, right - I keeeed I keeeeed). Plus, also that morning, Ms. Fuzzy aka Shadow will have her Christmas Furcut. Can you believe they wanted to schedule her around 8:00 in the morning - after how many hours lack of sleep I have endured this month - I. Think. Not. 12:30 please. Plus - if I'm cranky when woken up, you should see her.

So, if my blogs are not spellchecked this weekend -it will be because your gal is blogging from the event during my downtime. And if they are wordy, its because I'm having a glass of wine (if its after hours). If they are boring, I apologize now. And, I will attempt to take pictures of the hotel by the ocean (really Motor Inn but whatever - even a MOTOR INN is $150 bux a night - what gives???) for posting next week.

Some fresh sea air, a stroll through the sand with the iPod, new surroundings, perhaps a cute cop (or two) and a new mall (or two), and exploration of a 'Bucks (or three - I must map out the Starbucks), I should be fabulous. I'll be sleep deprived with raccoon eyes, but who cares - I'm doing what I love and what I was born to do.

Here's another discovery - they have a Sur La Table only 30 min. from everything. I have ALWAYS wanted to go to that store and have resigned myself to the fact pigs might fly first before I'd be able to enter through its doors but, hey, now I can! Don't shoot me - I'm excited. If I get the Sur La Table catalog, I pore over it like its the new Vogue. I'd forego SHOES for Sur La Table, such is the depth of my devotion - I even got some of my Global knives there last year (via online & cash back but still - Sur La Table doesn't discriminate - it loves me regardless of the fact I live in O'Town). I just got their catalog yesterday and you better believe that its already packed for my trip - how was I to know that I'd be blessed with a Sur La Table excursion. Favor is mine, I say!

Come Monday - I'll be drained and working on overdrive at the 9to5 straight through. We'll be stopping for just a short break for Turkey Day & Black Friday and then it's nose to the grindstone through November 30th. November 30th your gal will be having a cocktail, hopefully victorious, (Secret - don't fail me now) and December 1st, I get to sleep. Yeah... now that sounds like heaven to me right now. Screw the holiday party - I just want 8 - 10 hours of uninterrupted blissful sleep.

Peter & Paul: We Need To Chat...

I've been guilty, my friends - I've been robbing Peter to pay Paul, doing the bill juggle and, as of 2:07 this afternoon - I. Gave. Up.

"Enough with the finance juggle, Lys - you are going to drop more than one ball and break EVERYTHING" - I screamed internally. Some choices have to be made and soon. Now, the apartment fits and that's cool - I'm not moving again and can handle my rent costs alone but some of the other bills I need to get under control and quick. (Note to self: Explore VONAGE). Also, knowing that I'm about to deal with someone or something head on is better than drawing it out and procrastinating. Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely a rehabbing procrastinator. However, I've come to learn through life experience that procrastinating is just delaying the inevitable. If you know the band-aid is gonna hurt, just pull it off quick and deal with the sudden onslaught of pain - not wait, pull the band-aid slllloooowwwwlllyyy prolonging the agony and making it worse. Something like that was how it took me 6.5 years to dump Mark for good and look where THAT got me - bad credit, drama and the whole shebang. Don't even get me started on H. and his daggone Cell Bill.

So, last month I paid off one of the credit cards and, I'm slightly reassured by the fact that I filed away the card in my accordion bill folder which means I cannot use it. I won't however, just close the card account because it's my oldest card since the whole Mark & H. debacle and I refuse to ding my credit score by closing it. I'll just leave it where it is. I have another credit card that will be paid off December 1st and that will join it's brother in the folder. After that, its tackling the remaining CC debt while I build up my score and you better believe that it's ON now.

I've accepted the fact that I'm more than likely going to have to get a second 9to5 to just build up the e-fund and pay down the cards. I won't be able to do so until after December 1st, but hey - I can totally do retail. Retail and I are JUST fine - and it would be nice to get paid to help people shop rather than intruding on their space with my opinions (yes, I'm one of those types that will tell you if something looks great and, if it doesn't suggest an alternative). Plus the PRBiz is good but not bringing in that much $$$ right now. I'm over scheduled as it is. Is there a cloning machine somewhere? Basically I need a temporary influx of cash that selling plasma won't help at the moment. As an added bonus, I'm hoping to be DEBT FREE by the end of 2008. Let's hope, right?

The above drama combined with my February trip means an aggressive Debt Reduction/Savings Plan is in order. So, I'm warnin' y'all - I'm joining the Personal Finance bandwagon again. Seeing Valley Girl's list today inspired me a bit to re-evaluate a few things and lay out a plan. Because life is no good without a plan, right?

First Order of Business: Put down Nina Garcia's Little Black Book of Style and crack open the new Suze Orman - Women & Money.

Second Order of Business: Cut out the eating out and limit the Starbucks intake to 2-3 times a week while I'm at work (shouldn't be that hard now that I have quasi learned to make coffee). Ditto on the pre-work morning java. Also I need to start grocery shopping smarter (lists! Must have Lists!) and planning meals for the week. (Added bonus - hello weight loss wagon - we meet again!)

Third Order of Business: Clear out the clutter! What clutter can be sold is going on eBay. What clutter that needs to be donated is being donated. What clutter is taking up space is going in the trash or returned to where it needs to be.

Fourth Order of Business: Holiday shopping: 90% of my holiday shopping will be online and with cash back and whatever coupon codes there are. That with the addition of a list shall keep me in check. Lists and I need to get reacquainted again.

Fifth Order of Business: Limit the personal shopping. Any and all shopping in the immediate future has to be necessary and either with coupon, cash back or something. (Val - I don't think I'm strong enough tho to give up the Net-A-Porter or Bluefly virtual shopping visits tho! I just won't click the checkout button)

Sixth Order of Business: Re-watch The Secret - Re-watch it TWICE if I have to. Because, obviously I haven't been paying it much attention lately.

Well, I think that's a good start. Now excuse me please while I begin my second coffee making experiment...

Obsessed With: Stuart Weitzman's Ombre Pumps..


First of all - I've found myself mesmerized by the Ombre shoes that Prada has. But, sadly, when I happened to be walking through Saks the other day, my shoe buddy showed me the ombre shade I loved, but they were Mary Janes. I'm NOT going to spend $510 on a pair of Mary Janes that I don't adore. I thought I had saw them as pumps, and they were, but only in tan/brown. I wanted grey/black.

Well, The Secret has spoken and I discovered this: Stuart Weitzman's Ombre Pumps in Coal. First, kudos to Kalisah over at I'm Not My Hair for pointing out all things Stuart Weitzman on her blog. That gal has impeccable taste. Secondly, while they are pricey, I am going to do some investigating of these shoes. I need to know fit, sizing, etc. I'm hearing that they might run narrow. I also don't want to go into a situation like when I bought a pair of Michael Kors pumps in a 10 (I run either a 9.5 or a 10 in all shoes) from Nordys last season (the platform 4" round toe stack pumps) and didn't try them on. Sadly, the 10s fit like 9s. Yeah, those are my 4 hour shoes. If you saw under my desk, I have about 3 pairs under there. A pair of black wedges, the painful shoes and a pair of black flats. I'm armed to move people.


So - if anyone has ever tried Mr. Weitzman's shoes, can you fill in a gal? And, this is my promise to y'all - if all works out with a recent project, those shoes WILL be mine by birthday time...

This is Why It Pays to Modify Car Rental Reservations...

Traveling 101... know that the companies will always drop prices when it comes to rental cars.

When I first planned the Philly trip - I did a reserve on a car it it came to $364.00. I have a fabulous plan through Hertz so I really won't go anywhere else. I get a discount, my car's ready and under a special canopy and everyone is always super nice - love the Hertz Gold.

Well, a few weeks ago, I ran the scenario again and it was $257 for the Toyota Corolla for the 4+ days I'm there. OK - that's fine.

Last week, something told me to run it AGAIN - like a slot machine the price dropped to $201.

Today, driving into the 9to5, a thought came out of nowhere with "Check the Hertz reservation again & modify". Today's price of the car - $159. Yeah ummm... I'll take it! That's a savings of $205 from the original quote!!!

And who said that The Secret doesn't work ... put it out there and it will come back to you...

Adventures in Shopping...

Well, last night I went and met with Cal at the Nordy's counter at the Florida Mall Nordstrom. Can I say - LOVE Him! Can you believe he's actually taking classes with Ms. Bobbi herself in preparation for the new line coming out. Anyways, he was beyond apologetic about the whole drama with the other gal that I dealt with before and can I say that this guy knows his product line. After showing me some of the Nordys' exclusives (Gorgeous btw! - July 20th is fast approaching), I departed with my Sunkissed Palette, a pot of the Chocolate Shimmer Ink Gel Liner (stunning) and a generous size sample of her Crystal Lip Gloss. Most importantly, not feeling angry when going to one of my favorite stores was the kicker. I'm a loyal shopper and, if I could only shop in one store when given a choice of Bloomies, Macy*s and Nordstrom, I would choose Nordstrom EVERY time. (Someone put the Nordstrom at the King of Prussia Mall on alert for the Philly trip).

After that, I decided that I had time to wander. I did find a pair of sandals in the Nordy's shoe department that were VERY similar to the Gucci ones I've lusted over, but the $79.95 price tag made me hesitant (because the other CLS arrived yesterday along with the Oh Deer! Wedges I bought for Philly...). I looked for a pic of the sandals at the Nordy's site but no luck yet. I'll think about it.

Went to Steve Madden and looked at that tortoiseshell clutch I wanted before - it was on sale for $29.99 but I did NOT like it once I saw it in person. Onsite it's gorgeous, in person - notsomuch. Browsed through a few other stores (Can you believe that Coach didn't have a decent lookin' wallet - well in my opinion and walked out of NineWest without ONE pair of shoes - even though I had a coupon). I decided to go to Saks and look at the real CLs. Guess what - they didn't have it. They had ONE pair of CLs and it was just a pair of white pumps.

One of the things that the Podcast I referenced earlier for The Secret for Fashionistas was to go try on, look, touch the item, envision having it and then you will get it in time. Why not, right? I went then to the Gucci counter to look for wallets and found one that I kinda liked. But it was silver and I'm looking for more of a maroon one. Not that I can buy it JUST yet, but one day. I also tried on the sunglasses I've been coveting, and you know what, at $275, I don't think its wise. However the same one is on Overtock.com AND SmartBargains.com and I'll seriously consider it in the future. At 50%+ off, that's more of my price range with cash back. I went and looked at the iPod that I was coveting (the one with 80gb Video), but all in due time. Don't worry - still got the wishlist working.

I also decided to visit Williams-Sonoma and will be taking an Italian class there in August. While I was there, I decided to pick up some Red Velvet Sprinkles Cupcakes to make for a friend's birthday. Finally, Sephora and I connected and I picked up a couple things, one of which is a Microdelivery Wash from Philosophy. Figured I'd try it for a change.

Oh - and before I get a PF lecture *LOL*, let me state for the record, I got a nice little gift card yesterday and after I paid the DirecTV with it (couldn't pay the cell phone - go figure - should have worked like a Credit Card), and I used the remainder to go shopping. I still have some left over, but that's going to next month's DirecTV Bill.

Now, it's back to the aggressive saving and preparing for Philadelphia. I will be going through the closet & stuff here trying to see what's going on Ebay...

Interesting Podcast...

I was on my iTunes yesterday browsing for some 80s classics (am on a kick lately in preparation for Philly) and encountered Podcasts.

Well, I went looking for some Personal Finance ones and encountered Lime.com's popular podcasts and this woman, Mel Robbins, is amazing. I loved this podcast on the Law of Attraction for Fashionistas utilizing principles of The Secret (since, of course, I believe that its true). And knowing how Reese loves Chloe, she might enjoy as well.
